Formerly known as Artès, the region of Pla de Bages was only recently (1997)
promoted to the status of a
denominación de origen. It is centred around the town of Manresa in the west
of the province of Barcelona. Bages is the name applied to the whole comarca, but
wines bearing the DO symbol are produced in only 18 towns and villages, including Artès
and Manresa itself.
Interestingly enough, the name Bages derives from the ancient
Roman city of Bacassis, thought to have gained its own name from Bacchus,
the god of wine.
