This hilly region, bordering PENEDÈS to the west, was first
demarcated by INCAVI (Instutut Català de Vi)and recently by INDO (Instituto Nacional de Denominaciones de Origen)
. In 1997-98 its 6,000 hectares of vineyards produced 8.4 million litres of wine, most of it white and for everyday drinking
- though standards are improving with the construction of hi-tech wineries - made from Parellada and Macebeo (Viura)
grapes. Its Parellada grapes are also much in demand for making the cavas of SADURNI D'ANOIA. A little red
and rosé is also made fro the Ull de Llebre, Sumoll and Trepat, but until recently the only concern to bottle
any wine was the great cooperative combine, the UNION AGRARIA COOPERATIVA.
An interesting development in the region has been the purchase by Miguel Torres of the 12th-century castle of Milmanda
and its surrounding vineyards, after investigation had shown that the soils were exceptionally well-suited for growing
Cabernet Sauvignon and Pinot Noir.
