DIFFERENT NAVARRA WINES

AGRAMONT
ROSADO

If you want a good, reasonably rosado then this is the one to go for. Made from Garnacha.

AGRAMONT

This is one of the labels used by the large Navarra concern of Bodegas PRÍNCIPE DE VIANA in Murchante, Ribera Baja (see map). This wine is made from Tempranillo and is very smooth and fruity.

CABERNET SAUVIGNON
MERLOT

This wine comes from the Piedemonte bodega (see above) and has a rich flavour, with hints of blackcurrant and damson and a velvety finish.
LAS CAMPAÑAS

From the Vinícola Navarra Bodega in Ribera Baja (see map). It has been aged for one year in oak and therefore has a fairly deep aroma with a long finish.

CASTILLO DE OLITE

Another rosado from the Vinícola Navarra Bodega in Valdizarbe (see map). Dry and crisp.

DON DARÍAS

Huge-selling, moderately-priced red from the Bodegas Victorianas in the Ribera Alta (see map).

IRACHE

This wine is from one of the oldest bodegas in Navarra. It has its own wine museum and wine-fountain for passing pilgrims on the Camino de Santiago. Deep and mellow, with rich tannins.

OCHOA
Tempranillo

This small firm, which owns 12 hectares of vineyards near Olite in the sub-region of the Baja de Montaña, has been in family hands since 1845. Its respected oenologist, Don Javier Ochoa, is one of the most expert in the region. This wine is made from 100% Tempranillo. It has had more than one year in cask with further aging in the bottle, and is finely balanced with a roundness of flavour and a very long finish. £6.99 from Majestic or just over £7 from Christopher Piper, Ottery St. Mary, Devon.

OCHOA
Reserva

This is a Reserva wine from the same bodega as the wine above. It has been made from Tempranillo, Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot grapes and then aged in cask for at least twelve months, followed by further aging in bottle. A full-bodied, rich wine.

OCHOA
Merlot

As with the wine above, this wine comes from the Ochoa bodega. I found this Merlot edition rather strong on the tannins for me and therefore rather inky.

OCHOA
Moscatel

As with the wine above, this wine comes from the Ochoa bodega. However, this wine is completely different in that it is a sweet moscatel ideal for desserts.

OLD VINES
GARNACHA

This wine is produced from grapes grown on old vines, high up in the hills of Navarra. It is a dry, medium-bodied red with sweet ripe red berry and spice flavours.
PALACIO DE LA VEGA

A red wine from Navarra that is easy to get hold of in the UK. This wines are excellent value for money and can be made from a mixture of Cabernet Sauvignon and Tempranillo.

PIEDEMONTE
OLÍGITUM

From Olite in the sub-region of the Baja de Montaña. It has a strong bouquet, is rich in tannins and has a taste of almonds. The Olígitum range can be made from 50% Carbernet Sauvignon/50% Tempranillo, 100% Cabernet Sauvignon or 100% Merlot.

PIEDEMONTE

From Olite in the sub-region of the Baja de Montaña. This is a mixture of Merlot and Tempranillo. It is medium bodied and has a taste of raspberries and plums.

PIEDEMONTE
selection

This wine comes from the Piedemonte bodega (see above) and is very good value. It is rich in tannins, with a long aftertaste and a hint of almonds.
PRÍNCIPE DE VIANA

One of the more common Navarra wines that we can get hold of in the UK. It comes from the Príncipe de Viana Bodega in Murchante, Ribera Baja (see map). The reserva is full-bodied, dark, with hints of blackberry and raspberry.

REMONTE

This crianza red is made from Cabernet Sauvignon and has a deep aroma, a good after-taste and yet is quite dry.
