Different Calatayud Wines |

The rather unusual name of the Calatayud DO comes from a Moorish governor
called Ayub who built a castle (qalat) at the confluence of
the Jalón and Jiloca rivers.
Modern Calatayud is an important winemaking centre; indeed, it is the
largest DO zone in
Aragón. Along with the neighbouring DO zone of Cariñena, Calatayud forms part of what is
Aragón's southernmost winemaking region, situated approximately
87 kilometers (54 miles) southwest of Zaragoza (see map).
The Garnacha
grape variety is the mainstay of the Calatayud vineyards, making up
roughly 65 per cent of the total vineyard.
