DIFFERENT MAKES OF SHERRY

Most Sherry comes from the three main towns of the region, Sanlúcar de Barrameda, Jerez de la Frontera and El Puerto de Santa María (see map).

SANLÚCAR DE BARRAMEDA For a list of those wines from Sanlúcar de Barrameda, where the finos are called manzanillas click here.
JEREZ DE LA FRONTERA BOBADILLA Founded in 1882, but bought by Osborne in 1990. It continues to make wines in its own style. Its best is the fino Victoria.
CROFT Founded in 1970. The Croft company had been exporting Sherry for more than 200 years via its offices in Oporto, Portugal, but it wasn't until 1970 that it set up a proper bodega in Jerez. All the equipment is therefore very modern and all the wines are sold under the Croft label.
GONZÁLEZ BYASS Founded in 1835. One of the oldest bodegas in the centre of Jerez. The international fame of González-Byass rests on the shoulders of one wine:the fino Tío Pepe.
JOHN HARVEY Founded in 1970. This firm was actually active in Jerez in 1789. Sicne then and until 1970, its base was Bristol, and its wines came from many producers. It mainly produces Bristol Cream, which remains Harvey's premium product.
PEDRO DOMECQ Founded in 1730 and the family is still in control. As well as producing excellent sherries Domecq also produced the first Brandy de Jerez - Fundador - in 1874.
SANDEMAN Founded in 1790. Its main range of wines includes Amada Cream and Don Fino.
EL PUERTO DE SANTA MARÍA OSBORNE Founded in 1772, although the Osborne name didn't appear until 1890. Still family-owned, Osborne is, of course, the originator of the famous black bull silhouettes which still dot the hillsides and motorways of spain.
DE TERRY Founded in 1865, this is a bodega with Irish origins. It, too, makes an excellent Brandy de Jerez.
LUÍS CABALLERO Founded in 1830, this is a family -owned company with a long and respectable reputation on the home and export markets.
