OTHER DENOMINACIONES DE ORIGEN

It is my intention to update this webpage with other Denominaciones de Origen as they become more popular. Below is a list of those that I think will be seen more in the UK over the next few years (in alphabetical order).

ALELLA
This wine area is found to the north-east of Barcelona and it may seem surprising that it was granted official status way back in 1932. Unfortunately the urban spread of Barcelona has affected its development.
ALMANSA
From the Levant in south-east Spain. Bodegas Piqueras is showing us what Almansa is capable of.
BIERZO
From an area sandwiched between Asturias, Galicia and Castilla-León in Northern Spain. It has a micro-climate all of its own and is beginning to produce good reds based on the Mencía grape.
BAJO ARAGON
From an area just northeast of La Rioja, where wines are made using the Tempranillo grape.
BULLAS
From Murcia in south-east Spain. Mainly joven wines, both red and white.
CALATAYUD
From Aragón in north-east Spain. Reds are produced using Garnacha, and these are obtainable in the UK.
CAMPO DE BORJA
From Aragón in north-east Spain. Reds are produced using Garnacha, and these are obtainable in the UK.
CONCA DE BARBERÀ
From Catalonia in north-east Spain. Red and white joven wines with instant appeal at modest prices.
COSTERS DEL SEGRE
This wine is mainly the dream of Manuel Raventós, boss of Cava company Cordoníu. Good reds and whites.
EXTREMADURA
This wine area is found to the east of Portugal and has yet to gain official status.
MONDÉJAR
This is the most recent DO in La Mancha. It was originally a Vino de la Tierra (VdlT), called Sacedón-Mondéjar, and these wines can be obtained in the UK. They are good and reasonably-priced.
MONTERREI
From the mountain area of Galicia, north-west Spain, producing mainly joven wines, from Godello and Mencía grapes. At the moment they hardly export any wines as there are only four bodegas.
MONTILLA MORILES
From Andalucía in southern Spain. The main grape is Pedro Ximénez and the classic Montillas are "sherry-like" and are sold as fino or oloroso.
PLA DE BAGES
From Catalonia in north-east Spain. Again mainly joven wines, but difficult to get hold of in the UK.
RIBEIRA SACRA
From Galicia, north-west Spain, producing red and white wines; the whites from Godello, Treixaduraand Loureira grapes, and the reds from Mencía
RIBEIRO
From Galicia, north-west Spain, producing mainly white wines, from Albariño, Treixadura and Torrontés grapes. In Galicia, they drink this wine from small white cups.
RIBERA DEL GUADIANA
From Extremadura in western Spain on the border with Portugal. This is an up-and-coming region, producing excellent reds and whites.
RIBERA DEL QUEILES
From both Aragón and Navarra in northern Spain. This Vino de la Tierra is made from Graciano, Cabernet Sauvignon, Garnacha tinta, Merlot and Tempranillo.
UTIEL-REQUENA
From the Levant, south-east Spain. In this country we normally drink the Marqués de Chivé reservas and gran reservas.
VALDEORRAS
From Galicia, north-west Spain, producing mainly joven wines, from the Godello grape. Mencía is used for reds.
VINOS DE MADRID
Obviously from around Madrid, this area has only just obtained its Denominación de Origen status. Wines are mainly jóvenes, but are excellent quality.
YECLA
From Murcia in south-east Spain. Mainly joven wines that places like ASDA produce as a brand wine.
